System Overview

The enterprise content management landscape extends far beyond the major platforms. Thousands of organizations rely on specialized, niche, or custom-built document management systems that were selected years ago for specific departmental needs, industry requirements, or budget constraints. These systems served their purpose at the time, but many are now approaching end of life, losing vendor support, or simply lacking the capabilities that modern business operations demand.

Merkh has worked with a wide range of ECM platforms beyond the major systems listed on our site, including Square 9 GlobalSearch, Xerox DocuShare, GlobalCapture, and dozens of other commercial platforms, as well as fully custom and proprietary document management systems built in-house by organizations or their technology partners.

Specific Technical Challenges

Niche and proprietary systems each present their own unique migration obstacles. Here are examples of the platform-specific challenges we regularly encounter.

Square 9 GlobalSearch: Proprietary Archive Format

GlobalSearch uses a proprietary archive format for document storage that cannot be read by standard tools. The field schema varies per installation, requiring custom discovery and mapping for every deployment.

Xerox DocuShare: Java RMI Content Store

DocuShare uses a Java-based content store with RMI protocol access that is difficult to interface with from modern extraction tools. Its nested collection hierarchy must be traversed recursively to capture the full folder structure and document relationships.

GlobalCapture: Capture Workflow State

GlobalCapture stores capture workflow configurations with zone OCR templates and batch processing state data. Documents in mid-capture may exist in partially processed states that must be resolved before they can be migrated to a target system.

Custom and Proprietary Systems

Fully custom document management systems built in-house present the greatest challenge: unknown database schemas that require reverse engineering, undocumented file storage patterns, and no vendor support or API documentation to reference during extraction.

How Merkh Helps

Precision's methodology is platform-agnostic by design. We start every engagement with a thorough discovery phase where we analyze the source system's database schema, file storage architecture, and content organization model, then build a custom extraction pipeline tailored to the specific system. Our team has deep experience with SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL, and MySQL databases, as well as file system analysis across Windows and Linux storage. We can reverse-engineer undocumented schemas, trace file references from database records to physical storage, and handle legacy file formats that require conversion, delivering reconciled output packages for any target platform.
