Specialized migration services for PaperWise environments
System Overview
PaperWise is a document management and workflow automation platform used across industries to capture, organize, and route business documents. The platform uses a custom foldering and metadata structure that organizes documents into hierarchical categories, each with defined index fields and storage rules.
Content in PaperWise is stored across configurable volume locations, with the database maintaining references that link metadata records to physical files on disk. PaperWise installations are typically tightly integrated with legacy ERP, accounting, or vertical-specific applications that feed documents into the repository automatically.
Specific Technical Challenges
PaperWise's volume-based storage architecture and nested metadata model demand specialized extraction logic that no standard export tool can provide.
Database-Only Volume Path Mapping
Volume IDs are embedded in the file path structure, but the mapping between Volume ID and physical storage location is stored only in the database. Without this mapping, there is no way to locate the actual files on disk.
Nested Metadata Hierarchies
Metadata hierarchies create nested index relationships such as Department to Division to Employee that must be flattened or restructured for target systems that use a flat metadata model. Losing the hierarchy loses the organizational context.
Individual TIFF Page Reassembly
Document pages are stored as individual TIFF files with a database record linking pages to documents. Reassembly requires sequential page ordering from the database; the file system provides no ordering information on its own.
Non-Exportable LOB Integration Keys
Line-of-business integrations store cross-reference keys in PaperWise's custom tables that do not export with standard tools. These keys link documents to ERP transactions and are critical for maintaining business process continuity.
Conditional Workflow Routing Rules
Workflow routing rules are configured per document type with conditional logic that references index field values. These rules cannot be exported as portable definitions and must be manually analyzed and recreated in the target system.
Retention-Blocked Extraction
Retention policies are enforced at the database level and may prevent extraction of documents under legal hold. These restrictions must be identified and addressed before extraction begins, or affected documents will silently fail to export.
How Merkh Helps
Precision's extraction tools are purpose-built for PaperWise's database schema, handling Volume ID resolution, nested metadata flattening, and page-level TIFF reassembly as part of a single automated pipeline. We traverse the full folder hierarchy, resolve volume references across all configured storage locations, and extract LOB integration keys so that document-to-transaction links can be preserved in the target system. Every extraction includes a reconciliation report comparing source counts to exported counts at both the document and page level.
